Online driving instructor training  courses

The short answer is none! Anyone can train to be a driving instructor as long as you meet these criteria:

1. You are 21 years or older
2. You've held a full driving licence for at least 3 years
3. You have no more than 5 penalty points on your driving licence
4. You haven't been banned from driving in the last 4 years
5. You don't have any criminal convictions for sexual, violent, fraudulent or safe guarding offences.

There is no job interview or credit check required, but you should think carefully about if this will be the right job for you.

To be a successful and happy driving instructor you will need to be....

1. able to engage with and support people (especially young adults) of all different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexuality etc
2. friendly, calm and patient (even under pressure)
3. passionate about helping people learn an important and valuable 'life skill'

Many of the statements you'll read on driving school websites will suggest you can become a driving instructor in a few months. That's false!

Yes, you can train to be a driving instructor in a few months but you also have sit and pass 3 exams which are called Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 - and that could take 12 months or more due to test date availability.

That's why it's best to use an on-line training course like AAT's.

• You'll learn everything you need to know - step by step
• You can fit your training in around your current job, family and social commitments
• You can re-visit the training as often as needed, rewatch training videos, and develop at your on pace
• You'll be able to get unlimited on-line support
• You can engage with other trainees going through the same process as you

As a driving instructor you'll be self-employed, so like any other self-employed person your earnings can't be fixed or guaranteed. It all depends on the hours you work, the amount you charge for driving lessons - and how much it costs you to run your business.

As 'broad measure' though, if you teach 40 hours week it's likely you're annual income will be around £60k a year - leaving you with an annual profit of around £40k a year after deducting your operating costs such as your car, fuel, insurance etc.

However, if you choose to take up a franchise with a driving school, that could reduce your income by approximately £200 per week or £10k a year.

NO!!!

I'm not saying taking a franchise with a driving school isn't right for some - but for most it makes no sense for the following reasons....

• Most driving schools (especially the larger ones) require you to pay £0000's up-front for your training
• They require you to sign a contract which ties you into a lot of terms and conditions
• The training tends to be very 'regimented' and requires you to make a lot of sacrifices and travel maybe an hour or more to attend training sessions 
• You have limited (if any) ability to back out of the training and get a refund if your circumstances change or you're unsatisfied with the training.

For most, the far better option is to self-train using on-line support from AAT.

• You'll get unlimited training which you can do in your own time, at home, and at your own pace
• You get to revisit the training as often as you want for no additional cost
• You won't be tied into any contract
